Jenna Buffington pounded 28 kills to lead Winfield-Mount Union to three victories in northern pool play of the Holy Trinity Classic volleyball tournament at Winfield Monday night.
Central Lee went 3-0 in the southern pool at Fort Madison. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Holy Trinity tournament was split into two pools.
W-MU defeated Burlington 21-15, 21-19, Danville 21-3, 21-8, and Wapello, 21-18, 21-12. Burlington had two victories, topping Wapello 21-15, 15-21, 15-9. and Danville 21-19, 21-10. Wapello beat Danville, 21-15, 21-12.
Buffington also had four blocks and 12 digs for W-MU. Melina Oepping had 13 kills and had three aces on 33-for-36 serving. Keely Malone had 32 assists and Kayla Edwards added 11.
Winfield-Mount Union’s Keetyn Townsley went 19-for-21 serving with seven aces and Jami Wilkerson went 26-for-27 with three aces. Kyndal Townley led the defense with 22 digs and Keetyn Townsley had 20.
Courtney Matthews led Wapello with 10 kills. Lindsy Massner had seven kills, five aces and 21 digs. Serah Shafer led the Arrow defense with 23 digs. She also had 19 assists and four kills. Erin Hemphill served five aces and had 19 digs.
Winfield-Mount Union (14-4) plays Columbus and Mediapolis Thursday in Southeast Iowa Superconference pool play at Winfield.
Burlington is now 6-4 for the season, Wapello is at 7-9 and Danville is 1-7.
At Fort Madison, Central Lee defeated Fort Madison 21-10, 21-10, Keokuk 21-4, 21-15, top-ranked (Class 1A) Holy Trinity 19-21, 21-14, 15-6.
Holy Trinity topped topped Keokuk 15-21, 21-10, 15-9, and Fort Madison 21-10, 21-9. Keokuk beat Fort Madison 18-21, 21-19, 15-12.
Mya Merschman led Central Lee at the net with 24 kills and 11 blocks. Makayla Morrison had 17 kills and two blocks. Meghan Hopp had 11 kills. Macy Watkins finished with 62 assists, 21 digs and 10 kills. Abby Wellman led the Lady Hawk defense with 27 digs. Zoe Eschman had 18 digs and five aces.
Central Lee improved to 9-5. Holy Trinity is 12-5, Keokuk 3-11 and Fort Madison fell to 2-8.
