Siva stuns top seed Sumedh, shares lead with Jay on Day 1 of rapid chess | Chess News – Times of India

NAGPUR: R Siva Subramanian surprised top seed Sumedh Ramteke in the fourth and last round of the opening day to share the lead with seed No 2 Jay Sawalakhe in the online rapid chess tournament on Saturday.
The two-day, eight-round online event is being organized in the memory of Prabhakarrao Karkar by Lions Club of Nagpur city and Nagpur District Chess Association (NDCA). 50 city players are vying for honours in the meet.
Siva and Jay, having four points each, are followed by Arush Chitre, Nilay Kulkarni and Ameya Godbole – with 3.5 points in their kitty.
In the final round of the day, Arena GM Siva defended well with black to surprise consistent Sumedh in 63 moves. After losing his passing pawn in the 58th move, Sumedh tried some tricks but was left with no option and resigned.
Earlier, Siva registered easy victories over Himanshu Gupta, Priyanshu Patil and Akshay Patil respectively.
On the second board, Jay Sawalakhe too played well with his black pieces to get the better of experienced Kaustav Barat in 45 moves after the latter fell short on time. On Barat’s Queen Pawn opening, Jay chose the Indian defence for his fourth straight victory.
In the initial rounds, Jay scored contrasting victories over Savinay Meshram, Shraddha Bajaj and Aditya Bodkhe.
In an exciting third board game, young Arush Chitre failed to win after playing a wrong 59th move as Nilay Kulkarni escaped to a draw. Despite having enough material on the board, Arush had to settle for the draw after he moved his queen that he won in the 58th move as Nilay had only a king left on the board. As per the rules the game ended in a stalemate.
While players played from home, the tournament organisers gathered at the NDCA office to inaugurate the meet. On the occasion Sandip Khandelwal, Ramesh Thakur, Chandrasekhar Karkar, Rajesh Joshi, Umesh Panbude and Dhananjay Karkar were present.
