Seven Lakes volleyball off to stellar start

The District 19-6A volleyball season starts Sept. 29, with all seven teams basically starting from scratch in terms of win-loss records.

If there was an unofficial non-district champion, Seven Lakes would be the likely choice. The Spartans followed a perfect first week with three more victories against quality competition to improve to 6-0.

Seven Lakes swept George Ranch, defeated Cy-Fair in five sets and swept A&M Consolidated last week. All six matches were against 2019 playoff qualifiers.

The Spartans prevailed in a bit of a marathon against the Bobcats, who swept Seven Lakes out of the playoffs last year on their way to the Region III-6A final. Seven Lakes won both sets that went to extra points in a 25-23, 20-25, 30-28, 25-23, 17-15 victory.

Ally Batenhorst added 31 kills to her staggering total, with Emma Schroder adding 13 and Katarina Teahen spiking 10. The Spartans also made 14 blocks, six by Schroder and Teahen and five by Mayo Olibale and Casey Batenhorst, who amassed 57 assists.

Kailey Bickel helped lead the defense with 26 digs, second only to Ally Batenhorst’s 34. Blayne Burke contributed 20 digs, with Peyton Sykes adding 16. The Spartans could be tested quickly, opening district play at Katy.
