PETALING JAYA: There will be plenty at stake for the back-up and junior shutters when they face off in ranking playoff at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) from Nov 3-6.
Lee Shun Yang, Low Eu Cong (pic) and Ter Chun Long have been named by national men’s singles head coach Hendrawan to play against juniors Justin Hoh, Jacky Kok and Ong Ken Yon, the top three finishers in last week’s 100PLUS National Junior Ranking Challenge.
This seniors versus juniors showdown will be played in a round-robin format where all the players will be ranked at the end of the contest.
Hendrawan is giving the 20-year-old Eu Cong, as well as Shun Yang and Chun Long, both 19, all of whom are probationers, a chance to prove their worth.
Shun Yang, who won the National Under-21 Championships last December, is returning from an injury layoff and had to miss the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Invitational Championships in August.
He managed to play only one match in the President’s Cup, an internal team event last month, and went down 15-21, 21-23 to Shaqeem Eiman Shahyar.
As for Eu Cong and Chun Long, both will be desperate to impress Hendrawan again after failing to shine during the BAM Invitational Championships.
Eu Cong and Chun Long could only come in fourth and last respectively in the six-man Division Two competition.
The duo did not come through the BAM junior development programme and earned their places in the national team through a selection trial earlier this year.
Eu Cong admitted that failure is not an option for him.
“These three players will be no pushover, they’re the cream of the crop from the national junior squad,” said Eu Cong.
“I’m anticipating tough battles against them. Being few years older is no advantage.
“I still have to be at the top of my game to beat them.
“I see this competition as very important because this is the chance to prove whether I’m worthy to be in the team. There’s simply a lot to play for and I just can’t afford any slip-ups.”
