Saginaw-area basketball highlights: Swan Valley earns first win of season


Swan Valley claimed it first boys basketball win of the season, pulling away from Birch Run to earn a 51-35  Tri-Valley Conference East Division win Thursday.

Drew Kaeckmeister and Braylen Himmelein scored 13 points each to lead the Vikings, with Ben Fordney adding 10 points. Max Dawson followed with five points, five blocked shots and four steals.

Michigan Lutheran Seminary 50, St. Louis 48

St. Louis cut the Seminary lead to two points, but the Sharks missed a 3-pointer with less than five seconds remaining as MLS survived to earn the TVC west win. Cade Pestrue made six 3-pointers to finish with 18 points for St. Louis, with Eli Slangor scoring 13 points with five steals, four rebounds and four assists for MLS. Tobias Edgett added 11 points for the Cardinals, who also got eight points and 10 rebounds from Drew Reif.

Carrollton 79, Saginaw Nouvel 54

Carrollton led 42-30 at halftime and held Nouvel to eight points in the third quarter to earn the TVC West win. Chris Coleman paced Carrollton with 20 points, followed by Isiah Pierce with 15, DJ Voltz with 13 and Tay Jones with 12. Jonathan Tunney led Nouvel with 17 points, with Devin Smith adding 10.

Hemlock 68, Millington 31

Hemlock scored the first 14 points of the game on its way to the TVC West win. Hemlock led 22-6 after one quarter and 42-11 at halftime. Brayden Green and Nolan Finkbeiner scored 16 points each, with Michael Zolinski adding 15 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots. Finkbeiner also had six rebounds and six assists. Dylan LaGrow followed with 10 points. Landon Mays and Kaden Wisenbach scored five points each for Millington.

Bridgeport boys basketball hosts Frankenmuth

Frankenmuth 69, Alma 56

Ben Reinert notched a double-double, scoring 19 points with 12 rebounds as Frankenmuth pulled away from Alma for a TVC East win. Riley Roy added 13 points, with Ryan Brenner scoring 12 points with five rebounds, five assists and four steals. Sam McKenzie followed with 11 points and six rebounds, with Ethan Jacobs scoring seven points. Cade Frillici led Alma with 18 points. David Apple and Mike Howey scored nine points each.

Standish-Sterling 64, Valley Lutheran 61

Valley Lutheran battle back from a 35-25 halftime deficit to take the lead going into the fourth quarter. But trailing by one, Valley Lutheran’s final shot missed, and Standish-Sterling made two free throws to secure the TVC West win. Keaton Ringley scored 27 points for Valley Lutheran, with Josh Samsell adding 18 and Michael Harding nine. Alexander Gray had eight rebounds. Cole Pout paced Standish-Sterling with 14 points, followed by Chase Raymond with 13 and Truman King with 10.

Bridgeport 65, Bay City John Glenn 24

Jaylen Hodges scored 19 points with Remaureon Arthur adding 18 as Bridgeport took a 35-13 lead at halftime and built it to 48-15 heading into the fourth quarter. Arthur also had six assists and six steals. AJ Pipkens added 10 points for Bridgeport.

Freeland 51, Essexville Garber 29

Freeland led 10-0 after one quarter and 22-7 at halftime to earn the TVC East win. Josh Elliot paced the Falcons with 15 points, and Alex Duley added 12. Evan Burrows scored 13 for Garber.

Reese boys basketball at Vassar

Reese 74, Cass City 24

Reese took a 50-18 halftime lead then shut out Cass City in the third quarter for the Greater Thumb win. Damarquss Palmreuter led the Rockets with 13 points, followed by Jess Stricker with 11 points, Levi Foco and Landen Bender added nine points each.

Laker High 64, Vassar 45

Gideon Damm scored nine points with 11 rebounds as Vassar fell to 4-3. Dalton Hook and Marquavis Crist followed with eight points each.


Grand Blanc 52, Saginaw 44

Taylor Thompson scored 15 points to lead Grand Blanc, which got 10 apiece from Mya Williams and Kate DeWitt in raising its record to 6-1. Shavanah Hardy had 13 points and Sharon Smith added 10 for Saginaw (3-4).

St. Charles 76, Breckenridge 41

St. Charles improved to 7-0, taking a 34-19 halftime lead and putting the game away with a 28-7 advantage in the fourth quarter. Laina Harger led the Bulldogs with 15 points, followed by Addie Pahl with 14 points and Hope Kushion with 12. Lindsey Pumford scored nine. Summer Smith paced Breckenridge with 13 points and six rebounds, with Kara Whiting scoring 10 points with six rebounds. Alivia Cross grabbed 12 rebounds for the Huskies.

Coleman 46, Carson City-Crystal 32

Coleman trailed 21-16 at halftime but used a 39-11 second-half advantage to earn the win. Katelyn Pnacek paced the Comets with 19 points and 15 rebounds, with Maddy Miller adding 10 points.
