KUALA LUMPUR: You can always count on Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah to deliver. They have done it before and they did it again in the President’s Cup.

The world No. 39 women’s doubles pair proved once again that they can be trusted to delivered when it mattered most by clinching the winning point to help Team A overcame Team B 3-2 to win the women’s category of the President’s Cup.

Pearly-Thinaah were in the class of their own as they brushed aside Toh Ee Wei-Yap Ling 21-17, 21-15 at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) yesterday.

In February, Pearly-Thinaah were the toast of the Malaysian team who qualified for the Uber Cup Finals on merit for the first time since 2008.

Then, they helped Malaysia overcome Taiwan 3-1 to qualify for the semi-finals of the Asia Team Championships, which doubled up as the qualifiers for the Uber Cup Finals.

But the Finals were not going to take place next month as BWF had decided to postpone it to next year.

“Despite it being a one-off match, it’s still very exciting. For me, team event is always fun,” said Pearly.

“We’re so happy to get the winning point for the team.”

Thinaah said the points contributed by Soniia Cheah and Goh Jin Wei had helped the rest approach their match with confidence.

“It’s a great team effort. Soniia and Jin Wei put us 2-1 ahead, so we were quite relax. If anything, there’s no need to feel pressure at all because our intention was to just enjoy competitive match and try to play our best badminton.”

Soniia got Team A going by seeing off a strong challenge from S. Kisona 21-14, 25-23.

However, Vivian Hoo-Yap Cheng Wen found national No. 1 Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean too hot to handle as they went down 10-21, 14-21 for Team B to draw level 1-1.

Jin Wei proved her stomach ailment is a thing of past when she put up a superb performance to outplay Eoon Qi Xuan, the runner-up of BAM Invitational Championships last month, 21-12, 21-9.

Pearly-Thinaah then to seal the win.

The President’s Cup resumes today with the men’s team match.
