After faltering in seven finals, Nozomi Okhura tasted success in the eighth attempt when she outclassed Carolina Marin in straight games 21-19, 21-17 in the women’s singles final of the Denmark Open BWF Super-750 tournament in Odense on Sunday.
This is the first title for the former Japanese world champion after November 2018. The diminutive girl took 56 minutes to beat reigning Olympic champion Marin.
Anders Antonsen of Denmark won the men’s singles title with a 18-21, 21-19, 21-12 victory against compatriot Rasmus Gemke. Antonsen recovered after losing the first game to defeat his neighbour and friend at his hometown Aarhus.
Earlier, relieved after ending the long drought, Okhura said she focused more on defence and footwork.
“I’m happy to win. For a long time, there was no title for me. Compared to other opponents, Marin is faster and has a harder attack. I focussed on defence and footwork, and my feet moved very well today. Overall the match went well for me.” Okuhara told the BWF website.
Meanwhile, Marin attributed her loss to the mistakes she committed. “I think the main reason was the mistakes I made. I made all the winners but also all the errors. The game was on me. It was frustrating. I knew during the game that I was giving her all the points. I tried to keep calm but today wasn’t my day. I couldn’t come back,” Marin said.
English pair of Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge pocketed the men’s doubles title with a 20-22, 21-17, 21-18 victory against former All England champions Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov of Russia.
In an all-Japan women’s doubles final, top seeds Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota downed second seeds Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara 21-10, 16-21, 21-18.
Germans Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Herttrich clinched the mixed doubles title, defeating English couple Chris Adcock and Gabrielle Adcock 18-21, 21-11, 21-14.
