Lowell, Grand Rapids Christian volleyball to play for state championships

The road to the state finals has been filled with starts and stops and a handful of potholes, too, for volleyball teams across Michigan.

That road finally comes to an end Saturday with state championship matches for all four divisions at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. Lowell and Grand Rapids Christian will play for titles, just like the Red Arrows and Eagles did a year ago.

Here’s a look at what’s next for both teams heading into the finals.

The Red Arrows defeated Novi in a five-set Friday night thriller, 3-2. Lowell dropped the first set 17-25, rallied to win the next two 25-21, 25-22, and after losing 25-27, the Red Arrows locked up the win, 15-6. Lowell will now take on Bloomfield Hills Marian at 2 p.m. Marian defeated Clarkston 3-2 in Friday’s semifinal.

Lowell lost to Farmington Hills Mercy 3-1 in last year’s state finals. Friday semifinal was Lowell’s first action since Nov. 12 when the Red Arrows beat Rockford 3-0. The Red Arrows advanced to the semis after Portage Central forfeited Tuesday’s quarterfinal due to coronavirus issues.

A Saturday win will give the Red Arrows their first state crown in program history.

Christian, 32-4 overall, will go for its third consecutive state championship at 4 p.m. when the Eagles square off against Lake Odessa Lakewood in a rematch of last year’s final. Christian beat Lakewood 25-21, 25-15, 25-16 a year ago. Lakewood defeated Pontiac Notre Dame Prep 25-15, 25-13 and 25-22 Thursday.

The Eagles swept Cadillac in Thursday’s semifinal match.
