Karnataka: Mandir lawyer among Rajyotsava awardees | Bengaluru News – Times of India

BENGALURU: Kabaddi player Usha Rani who won silver in the 2018 Asian Games, Kannada movie director AT Raghu and Supreme Court lawyer KN Bhat, who fought the Ayodhya Ram Mandir case on behalf of Ram Lalla Virajman, are among 60 persons and five organizations from 25 fields chosen for this year’s Rajyotsava awards.
The list announced on Wednesday indicates Karnataka has taken a leaf out of the Centre’s book by honouring unsung heroes.
Kannada and culture minister CT Ravi said CM BS Yediyurappa will present the awards on November 7. The awards comprise Rs 1 lakh in cash, 20gm gold medal and a citation.
Govt to hold low-key event with limited guests
All awardees, except for sportspersons, are over 60 years. The awardees were chosen by a 25-member committee and ratified by a committee headed by Yediyurappa.
Supreme Court lawyer Bhat has been quoted on several occasions with regard to the Sabarimala controversy and he has argued that faith and belief cannot be questioned with regard to opposition against women entering the temple. Kodagu-based director Raghu has directed films of late Ambareesh and Tiger Prabhakar.
On the selection of RSSaffiliated organisations, including Yuva Brigade headed by hardliner Chakravarthi Sulibele, the minister said there is no rule that right- or left-wing organisations should not be recognised for their contribution.
He said the ceremony will be a low-key affair due to the pandemic, with only 175-200 invitees, including awardees and their family members. It’s said 100 people will be seated in the ground floor and the rest in the balcony to maintain social distancing.
