NAGPUR: With the postponement of Thomas and Uber Cup, Malvika Bansod, for the second time this year, missed on a chance to be a part of the senior Indian team due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Last week, the city shuttler was selected in the national squad for the Denmark event.
Earlier this year, Malvika was included in the Indian women’s team for the Badminton Asian Team Championships. But the Badminton Association of India (BAI) decided against sending the team for the Manila event in February.
The young shuttler, with tons of positivity, is not crying over the missed opportunity. “I don’t look at it from that point of view. I always take things positively. I hardly got a chance to practice since the last 4-5 months. So the postponement has given me time to further improve my game. Now, I have more time to focus on my preparations. It will allow me to have more sessions under coach Sanjay Mishra sir,” Malvika told TOI on Tuesday.
“I will not say that I’m disappointed. As per BWF the Thomas and Uber Cup have been postponed and not cancelled. So, that’s a good thing. This was just my first year in the senior category and I think I performed well. I finished as India number two in the singles category. Rather than being disappointed I am looking forward to performing well in future,” she added.
After making the cut for the Denmark event, Malvika was looking forward to rub shoulders with the best of the badminton world. “I was looking forward to playing with PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal. They are very good players with loads of experience. But never mind, I’m sure I will get that chance in near future,” Malvika said.
Malvika celebrated her birthday on Tuesday. “Because of the Covid-19 situation we are not going out. I will be spending the evening with my family and few close friends. For many years I was not able to celebrate my birthday with my family because of constant touring for tournaments. I’m happy to be celebrating this birthday with my family,” said Malvika, the one who always searches for the silver lining, no matter how dark the sky looks.
