Carlsen, Nakamura to headline Speed Chess event | Chess News – Times of India

CHENNAI: World champion Magnus Carlsen may be fresh after retaining his crown at the Altibox Norway Chess tournament earlier this month but his next top event will be the online Speed Chess Championship that carries a prize fund of $100,000. The Norwegian will have the company of some of the best players which include World no. 1 in Blitz — Hikaru NakamuraWesley So, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Fabiano Caruana, Levon Aronian among others. The event will commence from November 1 and is scheduled to conclude on December 13.
The event will also see young gun Alireza Firouzja taking part. Alireza, who finished second in Norway chess, will have fond memories of the Banter Blitz Cup final earlier this year when he got the better of Carlsen.
However, the tournament will once again bring to the fore the Carlsen-Nakamura rivalry that has witnessed some top-notch clashes this year. The two fought tooth and nail in the Magnus Carlsen Tour which was eventually won by the World champion. The grand finale between the two was decided only in the Armageddon clash.
The Speed Chess event was clinched by Carlsen in 2017 when he got the better of Nakamura in the final. The previous year too — the duo had played the final — with Carlsen finishing on top.
From India, 16-year-old Nihal Sarin qualified after winning the Junior Speed Chess event earlier this year.
