The Badminton World Federation has postponed the planned Asian leg of its World Tour until January 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The leg was originally scheduled for November, with events in the Philippines, Indonesia and China. It will now be played as back-to-back events, with all three taking place in the Thai capital Bangkok.
Two Super 1000 tournaments will take place from January 12 to 24 and the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals will run on January 27-31.
The BWF, Badminton Association of Thailand and the Government of Thailand completed a feasibility study to ensure a safe environment to stage the three tournaments could be created.
The BWF said, “It was agreed by the BWF Council that staging the Asian leg in November as originally planned was no longer a viable option in being able to guarantee the highest standard of tournament including securing all logistical arrangements for players and participants.”
The governing body said it will publish detailed tournament information such as safety protocols and operating procedures, plus impacts upon World Rankings and next season’s BWF calendar, at a later date.
The three Asian tournaments now sit alongside the DANISA Denmark Open 2020 in forming the conclusion to the new-look HSBC World Tour 2020 calendar.
