Air Badminton reaches PH: Airshuttles to be distributed to schools across the country

THE recreational outdoor badminton is getting a push from the national federation.

A year after Badminton World Federation launched Air Badminton, the Philippine Badminton Association is gearing up to promote the game in the country.

BWF launched the outdoor sport after the completion of the development of the Airshuttle, a plastic version of the bird, which can be used with the existing rackets.

Airshuttle is much different from the plastic shuttles that are common in the country, with years spent in development to make the bird much stable in different playing conditions.

To help grow the game, PBA will distribute airshuttles and the new net system to schools across the country.

The court will have the same length and width, but will have a zone near the net where drop shots are not allowed.

Air badminton, which former national champion and now Badminton Asia Regional Development Officer for South East Asia Ian Piencenaves says is much faster, will also have a triples event.

“Mainly, the purpose of this is to make badminton to make accessible to everyone. Some say badminton is an outdoor sport turned indoor but that is not the case,” said Piencenaves.

The PBA hopes to launch air badminton tournaments in 2021.

“We are going to donate shuttles to public schools everywhere, including Mindanao. Ang maganda dito ay hindi ganun kabilis masira yung airshuttle. It takes six months at least for it to break,” said PBA secretary-general Christopher Quimpo.

“This is not just a backyard badminton thing since tournaments will be organized by the world-governing body as well.”
